Tied Home Opener Slips Away at the Buzzer

Such is par for basketball, not ice hockey, where the winning goal for Johnson and Wales was scored with 20 seconds remaining in the game.

The men’s ice hockey team lost their home opener 5-4 on Sunday against Johnson and Wales University.

The Hawks (3-4 overall, 2-3 ECAC) entered the third period tied at four with the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales. Both teams scored several times while on power plays or 4 on 4 action, but the winning goal was the only scored in the entire third period, according to a post on the athletic department website.

“The entire game was neck-and-neck, neither team ever ahead by more than one goal,” the website reads, “but with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, freshman Jason Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) completed his first career hat trick to give the Wildcats a 5-4 victory.”

The men play Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday night at 7 o’clock. This weekend, both the men and women are at home. On Friday, Jan. 8, the women play Syracuse at 4 o’clock and the men play Southern Maine at 7 o’clock. The next day, Saturday, Jan. 9, the women play Colby at 1 o’clock and the men play the University of New England at 4 o’clock.
