MANCHESTER — College officials announced this week that a freshman was killed last weekend in a Vermont car crash.

Over 1,100 people joined a Facebook group in memory of Taylor S. McLaughlin ’13, as of Thursday evening. Campus Ministry director Susan Gabert ’91 announced Mr. McLaughlin’s death on Monday afternoon by email to a student body still on winter break.

Mr. McLaughlin was a business major and a sophomore. In high school, he played football and lacrosse. High school friends said in online postings that he was a good singer, and the Montpelier High School principal said was a genuinely friendly person. A native of Montpelier, his family lives in Colchester.

A funeral will be held at 2 o’clock on Friday at the Bethany Church in Montpelier, Vt. Calling hours were held Thursday.

“Taylor was a caring and sensitive young man, noted by faculty as a bright and engaged student,” Ms. Gabert wrote in an email to the campus community. “He was very involved in his faith community and was particularly moved by the refugee story of the ‘Lost Boys of Sudan.’ Taylor’s compassionate and responsive nature prompted him to volunteer serving the refugee and immigrant populations back at home.”

Friends and family worked through grief and memories of Mr. McLaughlin on the Facebook group.

“R.I.P. man, we're all thinking of you.”

“Please know that Montpelier has wrapped herself around you all -- we are with you.”

“Taylor you were always an amazing individual. So many good times passed between us and I will hold those memories in my heart forver. You were a great friend, son, brother, role model to many. Not a day will pass that you are not missed. May you rest in peace.”

“Each one of your family and friends carries a little piece of you, their own little story. The next few days are going to be a trial of strength and courage for us all and we are going to need you to bear with us.”

“Life was good, and now its not so good. You touched more kids than you know, for me you made life more fun and unexpected. You will be missed by all who knew you. I miss you man, you never let anything or anyone keep you down.”

“Leave it all on the field, that's the expectations we'd have of you as we stepped onto the grass. You would never let us down. Always a dedicated athlete that would carry the team on his shoulders if asked to. I will be forever grateful to have been both a teamate and coach with you. . . You will be greatly missed.”

The 1 p.m. head-on collision occurred on a stretch of Vermont highway divided by a yellow line that has seen other fatal collisions, according to the Burlington Free Press. This stretch of Vermont route 127 in Burlington is known as the Beltline. The driver of the other car was killed in the head-on collision, and a passenger of the other car suffered minor injuries, according to the Free Press website.

A daytime prayer service will be held on campus Wednesday, Jan. 20. The evening’s 10 p.m. Mass will be offered for Mr. McLaughlin.
